STIPPLING

I picked up a Dremel, to see what I could do with it to decorate furniture. My first attempt has been on the seat of Chair, No. 1. It is fun and definitely adds visual appeal and texture to the piece.

I’ll be playing with this Dremel some more! It’s easy to carve with. I used two different bits for this project. Both orbital burrs. The smaller of the two was completely dull and started burning the wood by the end of this project. So it will be advisable to acquire and keep several bits on hand.

Oh, some have wondered whether the texture is uncomfortable to sit on. In my experience (wearing jeans), no! If you run your hand over it, it kind of feels like a caned seat.

Also, the labor involved: it took me 12 hours over two days to do that seat. Most of that chunk of time is spent behind the Dremel. But some of it is spent figuring out and designing the composition, laying and sketching it out. And erasing. And touching up paint. And sanding.
